HYNKA Street, Gdansk, Poland. Completed 2006

Work for Proconcept. This development is located in a suburb called Zaspa (snow drift). This place is a pre-WWII airstrip which communists had converted into a massive, high rise residential super-complex back in 1970s. It has received a lot of criticism for its huge scale, octagon grid, crude pre-fab panels, but also provided a fairly high standard of living to tens of thousands of people in a very short time. This environment was not easy to deal with in many aspects. Instead of fighting it by contrast, we decided to use it as an excuse for creating a bold, modernistic form, allowing for great space efficiency. Design team: Marcin Kaniewski, Bartek Borkowski, Hubert Schneider, Marek Jackiewicz.
